Meeting your baby for the first time is an incredibly overwhelming, emotional experience. Having a birth photographer present for your labour and delivery will help capture those precious moments of your baby’s entry into the world.

For an insight into what having a birth photographer entails, we had a chat to Erin from Life Stories Photography, who can be there during your labour and delivery, or for the first few hours or weeks after the birth.

How did you get into Birth Photography?

When I had my first baby almost seven years ago, professional birth photography was fairly unheard of. I had a great birth and welcomed a healthy baby boy, but there was in total six get blurry photos of the whole event. It was great to have them, but one of them reminded me of how I felt the moment I met him. I had heard of people having their births photographed and I decided I wanted to give it a go. So, as you do these days, I took it to social media and asked if any of my friends would like or knew of anyone that might like their birth recorded.

Two weeks later I was called to my local hospital to capture the birth of Dylan Violet. I was hooked from that day forward and it’s absolutely a joy to be present at such an important moment in new parents lives.

What is it like to have a birth photographer?
Generally, I like to be a fly on the wall at a birth. I keep to corners, you will know I am there but I don’t like to be any kind of focus in the proceedings. I quietly document at the moments and emotions that come along with one of the biggest moments in a couple’s lives. When I say I’m a birth photographer everyone always pictures my camera pointed at the ‘business end’, while of course those images are captured, birth photography isn’t about that (well not really). When someone meets their baby, their emotions are written all over their faces, that’s what I am there to capture.

The positives of having a birth photographer?

The birth of a baby, however it comes safely into the world is a blur. It’s so easy to forget those feelings. Having someone record those moments gives parents the opportunity to just ‘be’ in the moment. Then there is a record for years to come of the tidal wave of love that happens the moment someone meets their baby. It doesn’t get better than that. The introduction of video into my slideshows is another beautiful way to holding on to that moment.
