The days of relaxing by the pool, cocktail in one hand, book in the other, might seem like a distant memory now, but holidaying with kids shouldn’t be something that fills you with dread! With the Summer holidays fast approaching, we’ve put together a definitive guide of how and where to holiday with kids!

TAS
Tasmania
Hop in the campervan and do a “lap of the map” around Australia’s compact state! Who’d have guessed there was so much to do on such a small island!? Camp at Freycinet National Park, sea kayak around Coles Bay, scale the tree tops of Tahune forest and mountain bike down Mt.Wellington. Don’t forget though, Tassie isn’t as blessed with the weather as the rest of the country so make sure to pack an extra jumper or two for your trip!

QLD
Gold Coast
Packed with activities and days out for all budgets and ages, the Gold Coast is perhaps one of the top family holiday destinations in Australia. From a relaxing day at one of the Coast’s world famous beaches, to a wild fun-fuelled extravaganza at one of the many theme parks, the Gold Coast offers the holiday of a lifetime only a few hours from home. Worried about the cost? Village Roadshow is now offering an incredible 7 day theme park pass for just $84 per person, offering entry to Movie World, Sea World and Wet ‘n’ Wild!

NSW
Jervis Bay
Big family on a small budget? Camping holidays are great for bigger families because they eliminate the hassle of booking expensive hotel accomodation, not to mention it’s heaps more fun for the kids! Head to Jervis Bay on the NSW coast and explore the surrounding natural wildlife and stunning beaches. Spend the evening bonding with the family around the campfire making smores and sharing stories – these are the memories your kids will remember for a lifetime!

ACT
Canberra
Poor old Canberra has got a bad rep on the tourism front, but our capital state is a lot more than just a political filing cabinet and has heaps to offer for fun-filled family holidays! Perhaps the biggest draw for kids – and, let’s be honest, grown ups too – is Questacon. Making science fun for all ages and attention-spans, you can spend an entire day exploring this place, really getting your moneys worth. Canberra is also home to a host of exciting places to eat – heard of Patissez? This quirky cafe has been blowing up on Instagram lately thanks to their freakshow milkshakes that will literally blow your kid’s minds!

WA
Coral Coast
Australia’s biggest state is more than worth the trip, with a whole host of destinations, you could holiday in WA for years and years and still never see it all! Perfect for first time family visits to WA is the Coral Coast. Feed dolphins at Monkey Mia, watch whales from Coral Bay and swim with whale sharks on Ningaloo Reef – definitely dont forget to pack your snorkelling gear for this trip!

Try this
If a big get-away is too expensive, or you’re just not ready to embark on a family holiday yet (your first few can be a tad stressful), why not schedule a few days out over the Summer break instead. Having smaller, but still super fun day trips to look forward to can be really exciting for kids, and break up those long 6 week Summer holidays. Here’s our list of the top three tried-and-tested family days out for Sydney and Melbourne!

Sydney
1. Taronga Zoo – Synonymous with Sydney and with an incredible view across the Harbour, Taronga Zoo is a great family day out that keeps the kids entertained for hours. If you live in the city, it’s more than worth paying for a family annual pass so that you can visit as often as you like!
2. Picnic at the Botanical Gardens – this cheap and simple day out can be everything you want it to be. Pack a picnic to keep the kid’s tummies full, and bring along garden games such as swingball, frisbee’s and soccer balls. There’s heaps of space in these luxurious gardens, and plenty of trees to shade you all from the sun.
3. National Maritime Museum – Most kids groan at the mere mention of a museum, but Sydney’s Maritime Museum is a favoured day out for city families! What’s great about this place is how interactive it is – kids can explore a number of real life boats from pirate ship to submarine, tag along on a fancy dress tour through the antarctic, and get your hands dirty with the creative craft zones overlooking Darling Harbour.

Melbourne
1. Luna Park – Who doesn’t love this place hey? Relive your childhood memories of the carnival at this old-school classic. Treat the kids to some fairy floss and ride the day away on the rollercoasters!
2. Werribee Open Range Zoo – Experience African adventure on your doorstep with this fun safari style zoo!
3. National Sport Museum – Everyone knows us Aussies love sport, and we like to get our kids started young too. Melbourne’s NSM has heaps of fun activities to wear the kids out all day long!
