On the list of advice dished out to new and expecting parents, "Sleep when the baby sleeps" has got to be right up there. But as anyone who has actually had a baby will attest, that's easier said than done. You follow the Safe Sleeping guide, but you still worry - are they going to be too hot? Too cold? Have they rolled to their tummy? Why haven't they woken yet? Better just go check on them... cue peering over the bassinet multiple times a night.
But now, we've discovered an amazing Aussie brand that has actually made it their mission to take away that anxiety from you, giving you back precious zzz's at night.
The Aussie company helping both you and your baby get a better nights sleep
Geelong-based father of two Matthew Hearsch was tired (literally) of asking himself these very questions. "We would often get up through the night and check our son by feeling his skin for an indication of his temperature. We chose sleeping bags to provide the best possible sleeping experience but the information we were missing was the internal sleeping bag temperature. It became obvious, from then on, that traditional infant sleeping bags were outdated.” And with that his third ‘baby’ SmartSnugg® was born.
SmartSnugg® is the world's first SMART baby sleeping bag and blanket
SmartSnugg® is a baby sleeping bag system that gives you back your sleep, and alleviate the unknown - designed by parents, for parents. It provides you with real-time information on your child’s sleeping bag temperature, room temperature, sleeping position, movement levels, and sleep quality.
The whole system comprises 3 components:
1. The SmartSleeper sleeping bag - crafted from 100% cotton outer and a bamboo inner lining, it's available in 3 TOGs (0.5, 1.0 and 2.5) and in most ways acts just like most other sleeping bags. They come in 3 gorgeous colours, and are equal parts fashion and function (side note: many parents purchase and use the sleeping bag on it's own, without the technology - and that's totally fine!)
2. The SmartBlanket - a truly innovative 'blanket' that attaches to the outside of the sleeping bag with handy press studs, to keep baby warmer without the use of potentially dangerous blankets (like the SmartSleeper, you can purchase this and use without the smart technology). We think this is as much a game-changer as the technology!
3. The SmartPebble and SmartBridge, which is the technology that makes it "smart". The SmartPebble inserts into a secure pocket in the SmartSleeper sleeping bag, and monitors both temperature and baby's position and motion. Using Ultra-Low Bluetooth, this has a battery life of around 9 months and is completely waterproof - once you secure it in the bag, you can wash and dry the sleeping bag as per usual, without removing the SmartPebble. The SmartBridge then plugs into your powerpoint and connects to your home WiFi, and literally acts as the "bridge" between the SmartPebble, and the helpful SmartSnugg® App you download to your phone. The SmartSnugg® App features customisable alerts that can be adjusted as you know your child's preferred sleep temperature, or safe sleeping position. The App also has a built-in dynamic clothing assistant that will recommend clothing combinations to achieve your child's preferred sleeping temperature.
The technology is so sophisticated, if there is a need for you to act, you’ll instantly receive a notification from the SmartSnugg® App. Whether it’s a restless night, a dangerous sleeping position, or an overheated sleeping bag, SmartSnugg® not only helps you to identify the problem, it provides you with the information and tools to overcome it. The perfect sleep temperature for baby, every time
We all know that overheating is a major risk factor for SIDS / SUIDS, which doesn't exactly help you sleep at night. But how do you know whether baby is too hot or too cold at night? What you dress them in for bed could very well end up making them too hot or too cold later on - and could be just one of the reasons causing them to wake during the night. No need to worry with SmartSnugg® - the temperature gauge will detect if your child is too hot, or cold and notify you via alerts on your App - no more guessing.

My baby would win a gold medal if 'baby sleep rolling' was an Olympic sport, and as a first-time-mum of a premmie baby the anxiety it caused me was next level. He needed the comfort of a swaddle-style sleeping bag, but as an active sleeper and early roller this meant that I was checking on him about 528 times a night to make sure he wasn't stuck on his tummy.
