The One Fine Baby team were excited to attend the Mother & Baby Awards Retail Product Testing Day, to help choose the winners of the Mother & Baby Awards.  The awards, now in their sixth year, highlight the best baby and nursery products across 38 categories.

Mother & Baby Magazine‘s Danielle Sen filled us in on how they create their long-list of products to be tested.  “We do a call out to manufacturers to let them know entries are open for the next Mother & Baby Awards and have them enter their products across 38 categories. Everything from Breast Pumps to Car Seats, Maternity Fashion to Baby Skincare. A panel of parenting experts then come together once entries have closed and test the products against our criteria: Useability, Quality, Value for money and Excellence and Innovation.”

Once the expert panel has done the first round of testing, a shortlist of five products for each category is created.  This shortlist is then reviewed by online voters, home-testers and retail-testers, who are mums that apply to review the products.

When the review period has ended, Mother & Baby collate all the scores and determine the gold, silver and bronze winners for each category.  This year, the winners will be announced on September 27th at an event in Sydney, as well as in the October/November issue of Mother & Baby Magazine, on sale the same day.

We asked Danielle if she’s seen the range of products available in Australia increase over the past six years. “Absolutely!” she said, “We are seeing so much more variety in the categories, as well as a focus on innovation and greater emphasis on safety and quality. Each year we take a look at the categories and how they can work harder, as well as making sure they reflect the current nursery landscape. For example, we began the awards with Most Popular Baby Wipes of the Year, and with all of the organic and fragrance-free options, we have split the categories into Most Popular Baby Wipes Fragrance Free and Most Popular Baby Wipes Fragranced, in order to really compare the products like for like.”

We loved everything we saw on the day especially some new products like the Ergobaby Omni 360 Carrier which will be released soon and is suitable from birth to 36 months. We loved the ability to cross over the straps, and adjusting the seat between different carrying positions was the easiest we’ve seen on any carrier on the market.

What’s Danielle’s pick? “Project Nursery have a fantastic product for mums called the Mum + Bub Smartband. It has all of the functionality and ease of use as a Fitbit or other activity tracker, as well as tracking foetal movements and doctors’ appointments as well as handy breastfeeding and nap schedules. So clever! It is a finalist in our online voting category, Most Popular New Product for Mum.”
