Behind The Brand: Celebrating 20 Years Of Bugaboo

Behind The Brand Celebrating 20 Years Of Bugaboo

Where it all Began: Celebrating 20 Years of Bugaboo

More than two decades ago, one man had an idea. It was an idea so visionary that it would revolutionize an entire industry and forever change the way we think about prams. 2019 marks 20 years since we saw the first Bugaboo prams rolling along in the Netherlands. This pram was so visionary that it would revolutionize an entire industry and forever change the way we think about prams. The Bugaboo has come a long way since that first model hit the streets, constantly innovating to meet the needs of the modern parent. It understands what parents really need with a collection of prams to suit different lifestyles the world over. From the city to the bush, through sand and snow, the Bugaboo can take your family anywhere and to do anything. It all began, when Max Barenbrug had to come up with a graduation project to complete his education at the academy of industrial design in Eindhoven (now the design academy). Max and his business partner saw the potential because it was revolutionary to combine so many functions into the design. It was the perfect all-in-one: a pram that’s flexible enough to go anywhere and everywhere. At the time, there simply wasn’t anything like this out there. Together they applied for the patent right away. “What initially led to the invention of the first Bugaboo pram was my surprise at the types of prams I’d see on the street. Everywhere I went, I would see people struggling to fold and even use their prams. And they all looked old fashioned and similar with infantile colours, cumbersome white wheels… There was nothing desirable about these products at all.”  — Max Barenbrug, Co-founder and Chief Design Officer. The next chapter started in an attic room on the Rechtboomssloot in Amsterdam. A small team worked fanatically on the very first Bugaboo product, transforming the graduation project into a pram ready to meet the needs of parents everywhere. This first Bugaboo pram, the Bugaboo Frog, went on to provide the blueprint for the Bugaboo Cameleon which launched in 2005. Since then, technical details have been tweaked and improved countless times, but the shape, silhouette and essential design is still the same.

The Bugaboo does things Differently

From avant-garde to high fashion or street style, Bugaboo was the first company to take the pram out of the playground and onto the catwalk by working with fashion designers such as Bas Kosters, Missoni, Marc Jacobs and Viktor&Rolf. This was the beginning of a journey that would bring Bugaboo together with some of the world’s most interesting designers and cement its reputation as a company who dares to do things a little differently.
