There’s nothing quite as adorable as your little bundle of joy wrapped up in a warm and cosy baby blanket. Babies spend a lot of time sleeping, so it makes sense to invest in a good quality blanket or three!

So what are the main things to consider when choosing a baby blanket?
Size
Baby blankets aren’t just for the bassinet or cot. They’re handy for the car and pram too, and can even double as a super-soft play mat. Most blankets are around 80 x 100cm, but you might want a couple of different sizes to suit different needs. A slightly large cot-sized blanket will grow with your child for years to come.
Breathability
New babies have sensitive skin so a baby blanket should be made out of materials that are gentle on skin and breathable to make it comfortable to sleep (and we ALL know how important sleep is!). The best breathable material is 100% cotton, but Merino wool is also a natural fibre that is breathable.
Warmth

Easy to clean
Let’s be honest, babies are messy little things, so you want to make sure their blanket is machine washable and will dry fairly quickly. As babies get older, they may become quite attached to their special blanket, so you don’t want it taking forever to clean!
Safety
As cute as cuddly blankets are, it’s important that bubs are safe when sleeping, and this means no loose bedding in the cot or bassinet. Safe sleeping guidelines from Red Nose Australia state that if blankets are being used instead of a safe sleeping bag, always place your baby with his or her feet at the bottom of the cot, using layers of lightweight blankets that can be added or removed easily according to the ambient feel of the room.
