So what are the main things to consider when choosing a baby blanket?

Size

Baby blankets aren’t just for the bassinet or cot. They’re handy for the car and pram too, and can even double as a super-soft play mat. Most blankets are around 80 x 100cm, but you might want a couple of different sizes to suit different needs. A slightly large cot-sized blanket will grow with your child for years to come.

Breathability

New babies have sensitive skin so a baby blanket should be made out of materials that are gentle on skin and breathable to make it comfortable to sleep (and we ALL know how important sleep is!). The best breathable material is 100% cotton, but Merino wool is also a natural fibre that is breathable.

Warmth

Of course, we want to keep bubs snug as a bug, but babies can easily overheat, so always keep this in mind when choosing a blanket. You may need a couple of blankets with different weights and thicknesses to suit different seasons.

Easy to clean

Let’s be honest, babies are messy little things, so you want to make sure their blanket is machine washable and will dry fairly quickly. As babies get older, they may become quite attached to their special blanket, so you don’t want it taking forever to clean!

Safety

As cute as cuddly blankets are, it’s important that bubs are safe when sleeping, and this means no loose bedding in the cot or bassinet. Safe sleeping guidelines from Red Nose Australia state that if blankets are being used instead of a safe sleeping bag, always place your baby with his or her feet at the bottom of the cot, using layers of lightweight blankets that can be added or removed easily according to the ambient feel of the room. Tuck blankets in firmly so they cannot become loose and cover your baby’s head and face during sleep.

For newborns, it’s best to choose lightweight, breathable, and soft fabrics such as cotton muslin, bamboo, or organic cotton. These materials help regulate body temperature and reduce the risk of overheating. Avoid thick or fluffy blankets during sleep — instead, use swaddles or wearable sleep sacks to keep your baby warm and safe. Always make sure the blanket you choose is machine washable, gentle on sensitive skin, and free from harsh dyes or chemicals.

You can look forward to introducing blankets and pillows once your baby grows a little older — usually after 12 months. By then, most babies are ready for a bit more comfort during sleep. Around 18 months to 2 years, a light, breathable blanket or toddler-sized pillow can make bedtime even cozier.

Until then, you can keep your baby snug and safe with a wearable sleep sack or baby sleeping bag, which provides warmth without the risk of loose bedding. It’s a great way to help your little one sleep soundly and securely as they grow.

To keep your baby’s blanket soft, clean, and safe for sensitive skin, wash it regularly using a gentle, fragrance-free detergent. Always read the care label first, as different materials have specific washing needs. Most cotton or muslin blankets can be placed in the washing machine on a cold or warm gentle cycle. Skip bleach and fabric softeners — they can break down the fibres and cause irritation. After washing, it’s best to air dry the blanket to maintain its softness and shape. For thicker or fleece-style blankets, you can tumble dry on low heat. Finally, store clean blankets in a cool, dry spot to keep them fresh and ready for snuggles anytime.

The ideal blanket size really depends on your baby’s age and how you plan to use it. For newborns, smaller swaddle or receiving blankets (roughly 70 x 70 cm or 30 x 30 inches) work perfectly for wrapping, cuddling, or using in the pram. As your little one grows, you can move up to crib or cot blankets (around 100 x 120 cm or 40 x 47 inches), which are better suited for tummy time, supervised naps, or cosy stroller rides. The key is to pick a blanket that’s large enough to be functional but not bulky or loose, ensuring it’s comfortable and safe for your baby at every stage.

To choose a safe baby blanket, focus on breathable, baby-friendly fabrics like organic cotton, bamboo, or muslin, which help prevent overheating while keeping your little one comfortable. Make sure the blanket feels soft but not too thick, especially for newborns. Avoid anything with loose threads, tassels, buttons, or appliqués that could pose a choking hazard. It’s also a good idea to check for safety certifications such as GOTS or OEKO-TEX®, which ensure the material is free from harmful dyes and chemicals. Lastly, remember that blankets should not be used inside the crib until your baby is at least 12 months old—save them for cuddle time, tummy time, or pram naps instead.
