Behind The Brand: Bobby G Babywear

Georgia Gantley became the proud mummy of two babies in one year – her son, Bobby, and her business, Bobby G Baby wear (inspired by you know who!). Here, Georgia explains how her desire to work from home and raise her little-one while earning an income inspired a whole new career path.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself? Are you a mum? Are you the designer of Bobby G Babywear

I am 29 years old, married and have a 5-year-old son called Bobby. I moved to Australia from Bristol, England in 2012, where I met my husband Glen-both living in the Bondi bubble. Two years later I became pregnant with Bobby! In 2015Bobby was born, and my second baby, Bobby G Baby Wear, was born 11months later.

What was the inspiration behind your business?

We didn’t have permanent Australian residency or citizenship when I found out I was pregnant. I was desperate to find a role where I could stay at home and look after my baby to avoid paying insane child care fees.

At the time I had no idea what I wanted to do, as my previous roles were general admin and reception, which I didn’t particularly love. However, while pregnant I developed a  mini obsession for baby clothing, constantly sneaking bags through the front door and hiding them in the wardrobe pretending they had been there for a while!

I was always putting together mood boards on Pinterest for different seasons and styles for fun, and then Glen suggestedI start my own brand. So, I did! In the last few months of my pregnancy I created a logo and my first designs, which were the popular hakuna matata slogan, all with the help of a graphic designer my sister knew. I then created my Instagram, website and content, then I launched in December 2015-11 months after Bobby born (and when I felt ready to juggle a business and a baby).

What was it like launching a whole new career?

I had no previous experience in fashion except working as a retail assistant in a few shops! However, my Auntie had a children’s clothing shop in Brighton, England, where she created her own designs and stocked top brands, so maybe it runs in my blood. I was totally obsessed with her and everything she did, and loved taking trips to stay with her and my cousins and work in her shop all day long!

Tell me about the Bobby G style?

Each collection follows our commitment to provide comfort and durability for your little loves. Working with a gender-neutral colour palette ensuring every piece is compatible with each other whilst looking effortlessly cool. Our clothing is made from organic cotton blends, providing nothing but the best for our Bobby G Babes.

What is a typical day like – parenting and running Bobby G

Monday to Wednesday are dedicated work days as Bobby is in day care, but Thursdays and Fridays I have Bobby with me, so we usually do something fun first thing and then come home. Then I work whilst he has lunch and chills. Friday is similar, but we also have swimming in the afternoon, so it is just a few days I’m winging it!

Final words?

I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone that has supported my business over the years. I do a happy dance when a collection is a success and loved by everyone! I am constantly learning and aiming to do bigger and better. My good friend Jo has come onboard and is in-charge of packing and despatch, but the dream is to open a pop up store in the next year or two and create a big team of Bobby G babes to help with the hustle.
