The most gentle and effective products for treating baby eczema

by Nadean Richards

baby eczema

What is eczema?

Eczema is a very common skin condition that causes dry, red and flaky rashes. Often these rashes are also very itchy, and very tempting to scratch. Scratching actually exacerbates the problem, continuing the eczema cycle, despite the products you’re using to treat it.

How do I know if my baby has eczema?

In babies, the most common area to experience eczema is on their face, scalp, body, arms and legs or behind their ears. Sometimes eczema will appear with a mild, slightly raised redness that seems to irritate your baby slightly. Other times they can experience what’s known as a ‘flare up’, which consists of very red and dry rashes, even weeping sores that eventually scab over. A flare up can be very painful for children and may keep them up at night.

What causes eczema?

Eczema has genetic properties, which means if other people in your family experience eczema, there’s a good chance your baby may too. It’s also common that children with eczema also suffer from other allergy-type conditions such as hayfever or asthma. Eczema may flare up after a viral or bacterial infection, following contact with irritating chemicals (such as soaps or perfumes) or fabrics (like wool or polyester), or when your baby has exposure to foods they may be allergic to.

How do you treat eczema?

There is no cure for eczema, though there are plenty of ways to treat it and keep your baby comfortable even during an intense flare up. The trick is to begin treatment of eczema as soon as signs appear. Corticosteroids are the main way to treat eczema. For mild eczema, you can find mild over-the-counter corticosteroid creams at the pharmacy, but for more severe flare-ups, you’ll need a referral from your doctor for a stronger corticosteroid cream.

The most important thing with treating eczema is not to scratch! This can be hard with children, so often an antihistamine medication is given to children in order to stop the itching of the rash. You could also try using pimecrolimus, a non-steroidal cream, which can be effective in treating mild-to-moderate eczema on a child’s face or folds of the body.

To manage the eczema at home, make sure you keep baby’s baths not too hot, and keep the use of soaps to a minimum. You should also keep baths to once daily, or even wash just the bottom and face while the eczema is experiencing a flare up. It’s important to also ensure you dry your baby really well after each bath and keep the skin well moisturised.

Which products are most effective in treating eczema at home?

We’ve gathered some of the most effective baby cream for treating eczema in baby’s skin. Read about each below to help decide which might be right for you. Please note in no particular order!

Aromababy’s founder is a passionate advocate for promoting natural and organic options not only in Australia but around the world – a true pioneer of the industry.

What parents love about Aromababy.

Parents love that the Aromababy brand has been in the market for over 25 years, was developed by a mother for her own child and has a long history of safety. Their best sellers including Barrier Balm – it’s like a jar of liquid gold – their ‘miracle’ product. Also parents love that they offer unscented options – the beautiful Pure Baby Moisture Cream, Pure Baby Wash and Mother and Child Oil have no essential oils or fragrance – ideal for during the first important weeks or for anyone with super sensitive skin. We’ve also heard mums get emotional when they smell their Bath Gel or Pure Hair Cleanse because it reminds them of their first experiences bathing their baby or washing their baby’s hair.

What parents say –

“Your barrier balm is a lifesaver for my baby’s eczema. I’ve tried everything and this is the only product that works – and it works FAST, I’m buying more online now“. Louise

“Our son Logan was born 15 weeks premature. After a 13 week roller coaster ride he has finally made it. Having such tender skin he was most susceptible to nappy rash, the nursing staff used the Aromababy Barrier Balm on him instead of the chemical one. THE NAPPY RASH WENT ALMOST OVERNIGHT” Anita & Kirk

“Since my 2 year old developed eczema, I’ve tried a number of cortisone and other medicinal creams prescribed by our GP. One day in a chemist I found Aromababy. I was pleased to notice that within a week of using Aromababy, my daughter was no longer scratching herself and slowly the eczema cleared up. I was pleased to note that the products were reasonably priced.” Lynne C

“I usually purchase two of the Barrier Balm 100g at a time as my 4 month old has allergy prone skin and it’s the only thing I’ve found that works for him.” Leah
